GW Daemon Prince & Dark Elf update

painting modelsPosted by Pascal Rooze Fri, August 06, 2010 08:38:57
These pics have been on the net for a while already so it is about time I put them here on my own bog as well.

I got to paint the local gamesstore's preview model of the new Daemon Prince. It was really fun to do. At first, I wanted to make it a real quick job since I really did not have the time to do it, but the farther I got, the more I DID want to make it a great paint job. Halas, the indecision shows in the paintwork a bit, but none the less a nice effect on the various parts.

I already did get some good critisism, but also weird ones, like: although the paintjob was good, a lot of people didn;t like the sculpt itself. Man, I LOVE this model!

The last pic is a better taken one of my entry in the Dark Elf Painting Contest - which by the way I won...YAY! Too bad there's only this one pic though. Maybe I'll have someone make some more pics anytime.

Dark Elf painting contest

painting modelsPosted by Pascal Rooze Tue, June 22, 2010 08:55:56
I had this idea for a painting contest, and made sure the local gamesstore set it up. The store picked one model, that every contestant has to paint to the best of their abilities. I was thrilled to see that it attracked so many participants!

The contest is almost over - models should be sent in by end of this month - and I have worked my ass off on it, but I am done.

When I saw the model for the first time, I found the staff/ blade he's holding somewhat fitting for a man of the cloth, so to speak. Yet, the original shield would contradict that. Therefor I left out the shield, and decided to improve on that theme a bit. One image that came to mind was that of depictions bisshops with a staff and a ball, icons of his status. That was what I wanted, and added the Dark Eldar hand. I though it would add to the fantasy-feel to have the ball float above his hand, and pinned it into his elbow - you can hardly see it!

To get some extra points in the competition, I thought about doing some Original Light Sourcing (OSL), but with two sources: one would be a bright light from the ball, and one would be from the lava base. In the end, I did not put so much OSL effect from the ball as I intended, but i think I did right by that. I might have made the lava and it's glow a bit brighter though!

In the end, looking back, I think the model has been really great to paint, although I did have my doubts in the beginning.

Here you see the first pics made with iPhone (I seem to do that a lot lately - it's sooo much easier). Enjoy!

New Skaven Army (prt. 8)

Skaven Army BlogPosted by Pascal Rooze Fri, June 18, 2010 12:54:17
I thought I'd share some very overdue WIP pics, that I have had lying around. These pics have been made with my iPhone, son lights and quality are a bit off, but I assure you that the final pics will be much, much better.

The first few shots are of the Plague Priest I am also using in a fun painting contest on Battlereporter.com. I used the Plague Furnace priest model, but added a book from the PLague Monk sprue instead of the usual incense burner.

Like I said: it is still WIP, although the painting is done here. I only want to add the water effect and then it's done.

Next up, you'll see some views of the Screaming Bell, which by the way is completely done, but again: still need to get some good shot from that. In these pics, the Grey Seer on top is not yet finished, so as a tease: you'll see him in the final pics :D

Really had a blast painting it, even though it really is a monstrosity to work on. I really went all-out on it, it will be one of those very catchy centrepieces of the army.

As always: comments are welcome!

Changed the site

General ramblingsPosted by Pascal Rooze Wed, June 16, 2010 09:01:03

Yes...you have seen it correctly: I have changed the site so that visitors will be directed tio the blog immediately. It makes stuff easier for me to update, and easier for you to read!

I will be making some new pics of finished work soon, and will be adding that to the gallery (look to the right for a link to that!), so keep a look out for those. Some very interesting shit on it's way: Fully completed Skaven Doomwheel, as well as the completed first Clanrat unit (with water effects and yes: even the banner will be done). And we'll see some nice shots of the finished Screaming bell, a personal favourite of mine.

Also currently I am working on a Dark Elf Lord, painting that for a local competition. I am trying some freaky shit on that, with OSL and stuff. Going all out, is all I am saying.

After that: waiting for the new Warhammer 8th Ed. rules, so I can draw up a new plan for my Skaven, and get back to that.

New Skaven Army (7)

Skaven Army BlogPosted by Pascal Rooze Tue, December 22, 2009 21:00:48

I have not been sitting idle. I finished the first few Clanrats (althoough the banner is not yet finished, and I have not yet added the water effects of the sewer canal), and it is giving me a clear view of how the army is going to look like. I like it!!!

A lot of the scheme has been invented oon the spot - the fur, the armour, the eyes, the base - and some things I could use from what I did with the Doomwheel - the reds, the skin, etc. It was really cool to paint like this, it feels completely different from what I am used to.

Furthermore I have been working on the Censer Bearers, which I wanted to convert from the plastic Plague Monks, to fit better with that unit - if you have ever taken a good look at the metal ones, you know what I mean! It is looking great, with the arms of Empire Flaggelans, but I feeel I need to add some more...story, fluff, character to the models. I'll see what I can come up with next...

I finally finished the Doomwheel except for the base then!). Here are some nice pics, with closeups too. Also closeups of the first Clanrat unit.

New Skaven Army (5)

Skaven Army BlogPosted by Pascal Rooze Thu, December 10, 2009 08:13:32

I have been breaking my head over the water-problem lately. Until I could solve that. I dared not to glue the first models to my previously made basing. So I got stuck for a while.

What was the problem? I wanted to create a water effect for the models walking in the drainage of the sewer. I could do this the easy way: cutu off their feet, or even more, and after painting add some PVA glue and Gloss Varnish for the glossy effects. But I was afraid of cutting their feet and then to find out it would not do the trick. PLus it would be a too big a drop from the ledge of the neighbouring models to the water surface - just too deep! Besides that: it's a lame solution.

I wanted a solution that did not require cutting off feet, and create a thick layer of (semi-)transparent water, and thus also making the canal seem filled more. I have been thinking about pouring epoxies, but that would require a lot of hassle to keep the fluids from flowing off the base - do-able, but very time consuming. I have thought of layer upon layer upon layer of PVA glue - equally time consuming!

Until I searched the net and on one forum (cannot remember which one), someone (cannot remember who) gave a tip to use Acrylic Gel medium! A gel that hardly flows, dries up transparent, is able to be colored with ordinary paints and inks, and somewhat remains in shape. The writer showed how he created flames with it! It was WONDERFULL. And I had the luck that my girlfriend had been into painting a while back, and so she had a tube of the stuff lying around for me to dabble with.

It seems promising. I have done some tests, and some still underway, but I believe I have solved the puzzle. This is a great way to create rippling and splashes too, so I expect that I will be doing the basing for my Doomwheel pretty soon too!

Here are some pics on the Doomwheel WIP, and yes, I DID glue the first 30 Clanrats on their bases as well! They are looking awesopme and I can't wait to start painting them!

New Skaven Army (4)

Skaven Army BlogPosted by Pascal Rooze Tue, December 01, 2009 20:29:10

I have been quite occupied lately (damned Assassin's Creed II), but in little pockets of time I could get myself to do some work on the Skaven project.

First of all, I wanted t show what I was working on for basing. As I said, I want to do a sewer theme. I got molds from Hirst Art, got to some casting with quick hardening plastics, lots of sawing ad cutting - not to mention the brainwork to figure oout hoow to make it work, with the models and all, and here are some pics to show how the basing of my FIRST unit is going along.

Also, an update on the Doomwheel. Thanks to some people - who thought that my brass was looking like gold - I did some extra work on the metallics, and added weathering around all dots and linings and such. Also some more work on the entire innerworks, including the engineer, which is coming out perfecty - the fur is clean white, and all warpstone is glowing as I intended. Look close for the glowing effect, something I intend to add to ALL warpstone related modelling.

I have yet to do the small rats inside the wheel, before I can fully assemble the wheel. Then just the monk on the back, and the banner, before I can start to think about it's basing!
